Akershus Castle

Local nameAkershus slott
LocationOslo, Norway

Akershus is a medieval castle and a fortress, commissioned by King Haakon V, which was built in order to protect the capital. What was once also used as a prison, still remains a military area today, but several rooms, mausoleum and a museum can be visited.

The whole complex is often regarded as one of the most spectacular sights in Scandinavia. Its popularity can be demonstrated by the fact that Akershus's replica is a part of Walt Disney World in Florida.

If you want to enhance your experience, you can take a guided tour that will inform you about the history of the fortress.
