Santa Maria del Carmine Church

Local nameBasilica di Santa Maria del Carmine
LocationFlorence, Italy

Built in 1268 as part of Carmelite convent, the church was renovated and enlargened several times in the past. After it burnt down, it was decorated in Rococo style. Although the facade of this church still remains unfinished, its interior is decorated with marvelous frescoes and paintings.

The church is notable for the Brancacci Chapel featuring outstanding Renaissance frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino. The Corsini Chapel was built for an affluent family who lived in Florence during the 17th and 18th centuries. The last part of the church is the convent, which was damaged in the fire of 1771 and the 1966 River Arno flood.
