Designed by Erling Viksjø and opened on July 3, 1960, this cantilever road bridge spans the Tromsøysundet strait. The structure has a total length of 1,036 meters (3,399 feet) and reaches a height of 36 meters. At the time of its completion, it was recognized as the largest prestressed concrete bridge in Northern Europe and represents the first bridge of its kind constructed in Norway. It is designated as a protected cultural heritage site.
The bridge serves as a primary transit link between the island of Tromsøya and the mainland district of Tromsdalen. It accommodates both motorized vehicles and pedestrians, providing a direct route toward the city center and the Fjellheisen cable car station. From its elevated position, the bridge offers perspectives of the harbor, the city skyline, and the Arctic Cathedral. The structure is a prominent architectural landmark frequently depicted alongside the Tromsdalstinden mountain.
