Built between 1629 and 1632 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this structure is recognized as the oldest dzong in the kingdom. It marked a significant shift in architecture as the first fortress to integrate both administrative and monastic functions within a single complex.
The site is characterized by a unique 12-sided central tower and its position on a lofty ridge. The interior preserves the historic bed chambers of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Jigme Namgyel.
Decorated with ancient mural paintings, intricate slate carvings, and various statues, the monument remains a significant cultural landmark. It currently houses an institute for the study of the Dzongkha language.
