Built between the 8th and 9th centuries, this Mahayana Buddhist monument is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. The structure was designed by the architect Gunadharma and is constructed as a stepped pyramid featuring a pyramidal base and concentric terraces. The architecture consists of three distinct zones representing different realms of Buddhist cosmology.
The site contains an extensive collection of relief panels and Buddha statues. It is topped by a large central stupa and surrounded by 72 smaller stupas. The monument serves as a significant archaeological site and a major destination for Buddhist pilgrimage.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the temple is a significant example of Candi (ancient temple) architecture. It is open to the public as a historical monument and archaeological relic.
