The Q'eswachaka is the last remaining traditional Inca rope bridge. Suspended 15 meters above the river, the structure is crafted entirely from woven ichu grass. It serves as a rare surviving example of ancient Inca engineering, relying on ancestral techniques passed down through generations.
The bridge is maintained through the collective effort of four local Quechua communities. Every year in June, the existing structure is replaced during a multi-day process of weaving and installation. This annual reconstruction is a significant cultural event that involves traditional ceremonies and communal labor to ensure the bridge's integrity.
Recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014, the bridge is a living testament to pre-Columbian infrastructure. While these rope bridges were once common throughout the Inca Empire, this is the only one that continues to be rebuilt using traditional methods. The site is open to the public.
