Established in 1892 and officially opened in 1905, this is the oldest museum in the country. It serves as a major research center for the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and is the largest archaeological institution in Southeastern Europe. The museum is housed in the historic building of the former Koca Mahmut Paşa Mosque, also known as the Büyük Mosque.
The collections document the material and spiritual culture of the region from prehistoric times through the 18th century. It holds one of the most significant archaeological collections in the Balkans, including over 300,000 coins. Featured exhibits include world-renowned Thracian treasures such as the Valchitran, Lukovit, and Panagyurishte hoards.
The facility is wheelchair accessible and open to the public. The museum displays a wide range of items from prehistoric artifacts to medieval treasures.
