This medieval stone fortress is strategically positioned at the entrance to the Lavedan valleys. With origins dating back to Roman times and documented history before 778, the site has evolved over centuries from a military stronghold and residence for counts and kings into a royal and state prison. It was later used as a military hospital and has been listed as a monument historique since 1933.
The Musée Pyrénéen, established within the castle walls in 1921, functions as a museum of popular arts and traditions. The collections include ethnographic displays, fine arts, and exhibits focused on the daily life, history, and culture of the Pyrenean region. It is considered the largest museum of its kind in the area.
The grounds contain a botanical garden and various sculptures. The site provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Access is available to the public to view the historical fortifications and the museum's extensive collections.
