Znojemský hrad

The site has a long documented history beginning in the 4th millennium BC and later developing into a fortified stronghold; a wooden structure is recorded around 1080 and a stone reconstruction took place towards the end of the 12th century. Over time the complex served multiple roles including a strategic defensive point, a mint, a residence for Moravian margraves and a venue for diplomatic negotiations.

The present appearance of the complex is largely the result of 18th‑century Baroque modifications, while earlier architectural layers survive, notably the Romanesque Rotunda of Saint Catherine. The complex is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

Parts of the complex house the Znojmo Museum, which presents exhibitions such as "Prvorepublikové Znojmo" (commemorating the city during the era of its first mayor Josef Mareš) and the permanent exhibition "Umění Znojma a Podyjí" showcasing artistic works from the town and its surroundings; the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and provides information on accessibility and events like weddings at the castle.
