Designed by Frederico Carasso in 1956 and unveiled in 1957, this National Monument stands 46 meters high. The main structure is crafted from steel and aluminum, depicting a ship's bow cutting through waves. It serves as a memorial for approximately 3,500 merchant navy crew members, including 2,134 Dutch and 1,414 non-Dutch sailors, who perished at sea during World War II.
In 1965, a bronze sculpture group was added to the base of the monument to further symbolize the sailors' sacrifice. The landmark is part of the Rotterdam International Sculpture Collection.
