The basilica was designed by Henri-Jacques Espérandieu and features distinctive neo-Byzantine architecture. It stands approximately 60 meters tall and is crowned by a monumental statue of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus. The site serves both as a religious landmark and a cultural symbol, reflecting Marseille's maritime heritage.

Perched on a hill, the basilica provides panoramic views over the city, the Mediterranean Sea, and surrounding islands, contributing to its status as an iconic landmark. It contains numerous religious artifacts and artworks that emphasize its spiritual significance.

The basilica is wheelchair accessible and remains an active place of Catholic worship, attracting pilgrims and those interested in its historical and architectural importance. Its construction began in 1853 and it officially opened in December 1864.
