The monument dates back to approximately 1300 and consists of three large coral limestone slabs forming a trilithon. It stands 5.2 meters high and was commissioned by King Tuʻitātui, a ruler of the Tu'i Tonga dynasty. Due to its scale and construction, the site is frequently called the Stonehenge of the Pacific.
Historical research suggests the structure functioned as a royal gateway to a compound or was built by the king to honor his sons. The monument is also believed to have served as a solar calendar. Its local name, Haʻamonga ʻa Maui, translates to the "burden of Maui," referring to the Polynesian deity.
The site is a designated National Monument and represents a significant archaeological feature of the Tongatapu landscape. It is an example of ancient megalithic architecture.
