Rialto Bridge

Local namePonte di Rialto
LocationVenice, Italy

One of the four bridges that cross the Grand Canal of Venice, built for the first time in 1181 (which makes it the oldest one of the four). The original bridge was later replaced by more modern bridges until it finally reached its present-day form in 1591. Its shape closely resembles the original bridge and some people thought it would collapse as its predecessor did. The designer of the bridge - Antonio da Ponte - won the design competition against such opponents as e.g. Michelangelo.

On the bridge, there are many little shops selling various souvenirs but during the day (and due to its massive popularity) the bridge tends to be rather crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds of tourists, you should consider visiting the bridge either early in the morning or during late afternoon and evening. You can also see it from the water if you decide to opt for a gondola tour.
