USS Cavalla, a Gato-class submarine, is a submarine of the United States Navy named for a salt water fish, best known for sinking the Japanese aircraft carrier Shōkaku.
Her keel was laid down on 4 March 1943 by Electric Boat Co., Groton, Connecticut. She was launched on 14 November 1943, and commissioned on 29 February 1944, Lieutenant Commander Herman J. Kossler, USN, in command.
