This market is the most popular open air market in Munich. Spreading over more than 20 000 square meters, it offers a wide range of products, from fresh fruit and vegetables to traditional Bavarian food (such as Schweinshax'n and Speck), cheeses, sea food, or herbs. Some say, there are no better sausages than those you can purchase at Viktualienmarkt. Also, do not forget to visit the local beer garden.
Located in Munich's historical center, the market dates into early 19th century. This is when an older market, originally located on Marienplatz, moved here, because the original premises were no longer large enough. Nearly destroyed during Second World War, the market survived only due to its popularity with the locals.
Today, it serves as the place to go to, if you want some fresh foodstuffs, but also as the site of many festivals and events, like the Brewer's Day, or the Gardener's Day. Due to its lasting popularity, consider visiting as early as you can if you wish to avoid large crowds of people.
Some shops might have different opening hours. Please check the official website for further information.
Free admission.
