Built in 1630 in Khmer style to commemorate King Thong’s mother, the ancient stupa is one of the most notable attractions in Thailand.
The whole structure of the monastery is supposed to represent the Buddhist view of the world - the central prang is about 35 meters tall and represents Mount Meru. It's surrounded by small spires (representing continents and oceans) decorated with relief sculptures depicting the life of Buddha.
The monastery was abandoned after the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It was restored only in the 1980s and it was opened to the public in 1992.
