Guaita, also known as Rocca or Prima Torre, is an ancient fortification with a central core dating back to the 11th century. As the oldest and largest of three towers, it consists of two defensive walls and was reinforced over several centuries. The name is believed to derive from the German word Weite, meaning "to guard."
Throughout its history, the structure served as a guard post, a refuge for inhabitants, and a shelter during sieges. It also functioned as a prison until 1970. In 2008, the tower was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing the enduring history and independence of the world's oldest republic.
Following a restoration in 1930, the fortress is now accessible to the public. It stands as a primary historic landmark.
