František-Pavlík-Gedenkstätte

This site is the Honorary Grave of František Pavlík (1885–1905), a Moravian joiner from Ořechov and member of the Sokol movement. Pavlík was a victim of the 1905 demonstrations demanding a Czech-language university in Brno. During clashes on 1 October 1905, he was fatally stabbed with a bayonet by an Imperial-Royal army soldier, succumbing to his wounds the following day. His funeral procession was attended by an estimated 80,000 mourners, turning his death into a symbol for the movement that eventually led to the founding of a Czech university in 1919.

The event inspired composer Leoš Janáček, who is also buried in this cemetery, to write the piano sonata "1. X. 1905" (also known as "From the Street"). This memorial serves as a significant place of remembrance for the struggle for national cultural identity and is accessible to the public.
