The Riffelsee is a small, drainless alpine lake situated at an elevation of approximately 2,770 meters above sea level. Located below the Riffelhorn, the lake is characterized by its still waters. During calm conditions without wind, the surface provides a mirror-like reflection of the Matterhorn's east face.

Access to the area is provided by the Gornergrat cogwheel railway (Gornergratbahn), which facilitates transport to this high-altitude destination. The surrounding landscape features a network of hiking trails, making the lake a central point for travel through the alpine terrain.

The site is a frequent subject for photography due to the clear views of the surrounding mountain peaks. The lake's position and the specific angle of the Matterhorn's reflection are its most prominent features.
