This Russian Revival style cathedral was constructed between 1902 and 1903, though the local parish history dates back to 1846. Built from red brick, the structure serves as the cathedral church for the Kuopio and Karelia Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Finland.

The interior contains an iconostasis donated by the wife of the Governor-General of Finland. Additionally, the cathedral houses a collection of 19th-century bells that were brought from Saint Petersburg.

As a central religious site and community hub, the building hosts regular Orthodox liturgical services and various religious events. It is officially designated as a Cultural Heritage Site.
