Built in the colonial era starting in 1747, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest cathedral in Central America. The building exhibits a unique architectural blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Its structural design includes five naves and 24 pilastras, while the exterior is characterized by a notable baroque roof landscape.

The interior is recognized for its natural lighting system. As the seat of the local Diocese, the cathedral serves as a major religious hub and hosts significant liturgical events, such as the assembly of the CAMEX in its crypt.

The cathedral serves as the final resting place for several prominent national figures. Most notably, it contains the tomb of the renowned poet Rubén Darío.
