These ancient defensive earthworks, also known as the Limes Sarmatiae, consist of an extensive system of earthen ramparts and ditches. The network is approximately 1,260 kilometers long, encircling the Great Hungarian Plain and extending into parts of modern-day Romania and Serbia. Remnants of these linear structures are still visible in the landscape.

The fortifications were extensively expanded during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century, although some components date back to the 2nd century AD. The system likely functioned as a defensive border to protect the Pannonian provinces and the territories of the Sarmatians from external incursions.

Designated as a National Monument, the site offers insights into the military history and defensive structures of the late Roman period. A section of these ancient ramparts is preserved as a protected archaeological site, representing a significant example of Roman-era military engineering in the region.
