The Chamare Museum is part of the KuNgoni Centre of Culture and Art, a non-profit organization established in 1976. It is situated within the Mua Mission, which is the oldest Catholic mission in Malawi. The institution serves as a dedicated space for preserving the cultural heritage and lifestyle of the Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao ethnic groups.
The museum features a vast array of historical artifacts and photographs documenting local traditions. It is notably home to the world's largest collection of Gule Wamkulu ritual masks, which are central to the traditions of the Nyau secret society. These displays provide a detailed look into the spiritual and social history of the region's tribes.
Beyond its role as a museum, the site functions as a hub for cultural research and local woodcarving. The center promotes indigenous art forms and offers an academic perspective on the development of local customs over time. The facility is open to the public.
