This open-air museum is housed in a collection of 18th-century colonial buildings and exhibits the regional transition from a hunting community to an industrial hub. Notable structures within the complex include the Bethelkirken (Blue Church), which is the oldest church in Greenland, and a reconstructed peat house from the early 20th century. An iconic whale bone gate marks the entrance to the historical site.

The collections feature significant archaeological artifacts from the Saqqaq culture, alongside traditional hunting tools, historical art, and displays related to shipping and trade. Specialized exhibitions also detail the history of the local UNESCO World Heritage site and the evolution of the regional industry. The institution, which opened in 1986, is open to the public.
