Tsodilo

Four quartzite hills rise dramatically from the surrounding flat landscape, known individually as Male, Female, Child, and an unnamed knoll. The site contains rock shelters, depressions, and caves that provide evidence of human activity spanning 100,000 years. It is recognized for its unique record of settlement and profound spiritual significance.

Often called the Louvre of the desert, the area features one of the highest concentrations of rock art in the world. Approximately 4,500 ancient paintings are scattered across the hills, representing a dense collection of historical and cultural expression. The rock art and the hills themselves are considered sacred by the local San and Hambukushu peoples.

As a significant cultural and archaeological landmark, the site is accessible for sustainable tourism and managed through integrated plans that focus on community development. The hills serve as a major archaeological record of human settlement over many millennia.
