Founded in the 16th century, this historic fortress and monastery is one of the largest of its kind in the country. It originally served as a defensive stronghold and was the seat of the first king of Bhutan. Today, it functions as the administrative center for the local district and houses Drukpa monks.
The structure is situated on a ridge overlooking the valley below. Notable architectural elements include a prominent central tower and a unique protected water passage. The inner courtyard is accessible, providing a view of the traditional craftsmanship and spiritual environment.
The site hosts the annual Jakar Tshechu, a cultural festival characterized by traditional chants and mask dances. A significant highlight of the event is the 'black hat' dance performed by the resident monks.
