This historic fortress and monastery dates back to the 16th century and serves as the ancestral seat of the Wangchuck dynasty, the ruling family of Bhutan. It functions as a significant administrative and religious center, representing the kingdom's traditional architecture and cultural history.
Built in a strategic mountain location, the structure overlooks the Mangde Chhu gorge. It is the largest dzong in the country and consists of a complex of 25 temples. The site also features a watchtower museum, which preserves historical and religious artifacts.
The complex hosts a traditional five-day tsechu festival, a significant religious event. As a major monastic complex, it continues to house a community of monks while serving as a primary historical and cultural landmark.
