Taputapuātea Marae

This sacred sanctuary is the largest marae in Polynesia and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017. Historically, it functioned as the central religious and political hub for Eastern Polynesia and the Mā’ohi civilization. It is recognized as the birthplace of Polynesian culture, serving as a significant center for learning, spiritual connection, and political exchange within the Polynesian Triangle.

The archaeological complex covers an area of approximately 2,124 square meters and is situated along the water's edge. The site features structures constructed from basalt and coral stones. These remains represent a historic temple complex that once hosted major ceremonies and served as a focal point for the region's spiritual life.

The site played a crucial role in maritime history as a major center for ancient navigators. From this location, voyagers set out to explore the Pacific Ocean, utilizing the site as a base for navigation and voyaging. Today, the complex remains a significant archaeological monument preserved for its unique ancient history and cultural importance.
