The Great Buddha Dordenma is a massive Shakyamuni Buddha statue made of bronze and gilded in gold, standing over 50 meters tall. Completed in 2015 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth king of Bhutan, the monument is one of the largest Buddha rupas in the world. It is situated within the Kuensel Phodrang nature park on a mountain overlooking the Thimphu Valley.
The structure houses 125,000 smaller Buddha statues within its chest, each of which is also gilded in gold. The throne upon which the statue sits contains a large meditation hall intended to serve as a site of peace and harmony. The monument's construction was a significant undertaking, resulting in a landmark that is both a religious site and a cultural attraction.
The site is known for providing panoramic views of the surrounding capital city and mountains. It is recognized as a prominent landmark in Bhutan, often featured alongside other major cultural sites like the Tiger's Nest Monastery.
