Engelberg Abbey

Founded in 1120, this Benedictine abbey is a site of historical and spiritual significance. The current complex showcases Baroque architecture resulting from a reconstruction in the 18th century. It remains an active religious site, serving both as a monastic community and the local parish. The monastery church, known as the Klosterkirche, hosts daily masses, liturgical celebrations, and monastic prayer hours.

The abbey houses the largest organ in Switzerland and a historic library containing rare manuscripts. Beyond its religious functions, the site operates as an educational center through the Stiftsschule Engelberg and acts as a regional economic hub. Historically, the abbey played a role in the international Benedictine tradition by founding daughter abbeys in the United States.

The grounds are accessible for church services and prayer. Public guided tours are available and require booking in advance. This Cultural Heritage Site continues to function as a place of peace and Benedictine tradition.
