Established on April 29, 1976, this 194-square-kilometer protected area is characterized by high-altitude terrain featuring numerous glaciers, the glacier-fed Ala-Archa River, and mountain peaks exceeding 4,000 meters. Notable natural landmarks include the Ak-Sai waterfall, spruce-covered slopes, and ancient juniper forests.

The park functions as a center for mountaineering training and scientific research. Available trails vary in difficulty, from accessible paths along the river valley to demanding alpine trekking routes. A museum of nature is located on-site, alongside designated picnic sites and camp sites. During the winter, the mountainous landscape is used for skiing, while the summer months are primarily used for day hikes.

The reserve supports a wide range of biodiversity, including the rare snow leopard. While it remains a major site for nature observation and outdoor sports, the area currently faces environmental challenges linked to ongoing construction projects.
