Established in 1645, this massive fortress-monastery is a primary example of traditional Bhutanese architecture. Belonging to the Drukpa Lineage of the Drugpa-Kagyü school, the structure overlooks the surrounding valley and includes a traditional cantilever bridge. The interior is decorated with intricate wall paintings depicting the four friends, the wheel of life, and cosmic mandalas.
The complex serves as both a religious center and the administrative seat for the local Dzongkhag. It houses the district monastic body and remains a significant cultural and architectural landmark.
The site is notable for hosting the annual tshechu festival. As a functional administrative building and active monastery, it plays a central role in the religious and civic life of the region.
