This well-preserved stone structure is characterized by its 31 rooms topped with domed ceilings. Situated at an altitude of over 3,000 meters in a remote mountain valley, the site features a stark, minimalist architectural style. It is recognized as an important archaeological site and a significant example of medieval fortification.
Historically debated origins suggest the structure was built between the 10th and 15th centuries. Evidence indicates it may have been established on the site of an earlier Nestorian or Buddhist monastery. During its peak, it functioned as a vital fortified point for protecting and housing trade caravans traveling along the ancient Silk Road.
The complex provided both a place of worship and a refuge for travelers in the rugged, high-altitude landscape. It remains a notable landmark of nomadic heritage, reflecting the historical significance of medieval trans-continental trade routes.
