Part of a vast salt pan complex, this site is one of the largest salt flats on Earth. Situated at 903 meters above sea level, the area is characterized by its remote, flat, and largely uninhabited landscape. It serves as a significant site for industrial soda ash mining due to its extensive salt deposits.

The environment undergoes a dramatic seasonal transformation. During the dry season, the pan exists as an arid, sunbaked expanse. With the arrival of the rains, it becomes a seasonal lake and glittering wetland habitat. This transformation attracts thousands of waterbirds, including massive flocks of flamingos and other migrating wildlife. The Nata Bird Sanctuary is located within this region, and wildlife activity is most prominent during the rainy season.

Historical records include descriptions by the explorer David Livingstone. The location also serves as a venue for tourism-related activities and major events, such as the Makgadikgadi Epic (MEPIC).
