The site marks the location where the Treaty of Kiganda was signed on 6 June 1903. This agreement was reached between German colonial forces and Mwezi IV, the ruler of Burundi. The treaty is historically significant for acknowledging the independence of Ingoma y’Uburundi, or the Kingdom of Burundi.
