This UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site preserves the ruins of the ancient capital of the Khorezm Empire (also known as Khwarazm). Between the 11th and 16th centuries, the city flourished as a vital hub along the Silk Road and served as a major international center for Islamic culture and learning.
