This river island is situated within an ancient forest and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025 as part of the Gola-Tiwai complex. The site functions as a community-led conservation area and serves as a significant location for ecological research.
The sanctuary is known for hosting one of the highest concentrations and diversities of primates globally, with 11 different species present. It is also a critical habitat for the rare pygmy hippopotamus and a wide variety of tropical flora.
A remote, off-grid wilderness camp provides on-site accommodation. Guided forest walks, night hikes, boat tours, and canoe trips are available for wildlife observation. The site is open to the public and also facilitates community visits.
