Originally founded in 1638 by Ngawang Namgyal (also known as Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal), this site served as a vital fortress and monastery. It held a strategic position on a ridge, playing a crucial role in the administration and unification of Bhutan.
A devastating fire in 2012 destroyed much of the original structure. Subsequent extensive reconstruction efforts focused on restoring the traditional architecture while integrating modern seismic safety features to protect the site from future damage.
As a historic Buddhist monastery and fortress, the building remains a significant example of Bhutanese architecture. The site serves as both a place of worship and a historical monument.
