Founded in 1913 by Dr. Albert Schweitzer and his wife Hélène Bresslau, this medical institution on the banks of the Ogooué River is a significant site for humanitarian history. It is recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. The museum is housed within the original hospital buildings constructed by the Nobel laureate.
The collection features preserved rooms, original medical instruments, and pharmacy equipment. Exhibits include historical photographs, personal documents, and artifacts that trace the development of the hospital and the life of its founder, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952.
The grounds also contain the grave of Dr. Albert Schweitzer and the cemetery where his collaborators are buried. The site is open to the public and preserves the legacy of medical work in Central Africa.
