Founded in the 19th century by King Ntare Rugamba, this site is a historic royal center of the Burundian monarchy. It is recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as a sanctuary for sacred drums. The location preserves the cultural heritage of the Batimbo drummers and serves as a primary site for the ritual dance of the royal drum, a tradition recognized for its global cultural significance.
The sanctuary is situated on a hilltop and includes a traditional royal palace and dedicated spaces for the preservation of sacred instruments. During performances, drummers wear the colors of the Burundian flag to celebrate life through rhythmic movement and sound. The hilltop landscape is considered sacred and has been maintained to showcase the historical environment of the monarchy.
