Built as illegal settlement, this area used to be one of the poorest and most dangerous in Medellín with fights of local gangs and guerrillas occurring on daily basis. However, those days are fortunately gone and nowadays, this district is relatively safe and open to everybody who wishes to explore its picturesque streets full of mesmerizing street art pieces.
If you are afraid to wander through the neighbourhood on your own, you can join one of the free tours which are led by guides who actually live in Comuna 13.
