Hạ Long Bay

Local nameVịnh Hạ Long
LocationHạ Long, Vietnam

This magnificent UNESCO Heritage Site consists of about 1,600 islands and islets scattered along the bay, from which many of them are left untouched by human hand (for the most part). With the addition of rocky formations and crystal blue waters, it creates a truly wonderful gem. Plenty of tourists come here every year not only for the spectacular views but also because of the traditional floating villages dating back to the 19th century.

The name of this gem comes from a legend about dragons, who were a gift to the people of Vietnam to help them protect themselves against invaders. The dragons magically spawned islands that created a wall, which the intruders could not cross. The place where these creatures settled down after the fight was named Ha Long (descending dragons).

Just like any other beautiful place that has rapidly grown in popularity, Ha Long Bay is starting to have problems with being overcrowded by tourists. If you want to enjoy this place in peace, consider visiting it during off-peak season.
