This unmistakeably bright, large red gate is the first thing most tourists see when they enter the Senso-ji Temple. In English, its name translates as the Thunder Gate, and it has become something of a tourist attraction in its own right over the years.
The gate, first built in the first half of the 10th century AD, was rebuilt several times through its history. The construction you can see today dates to the 1960s when it was rebuilt after the Second World War. It is nearly 12 metres tall and wide.
When visiting, notice the two statues seated on each side of the gate's interior. They depict two Shinto gods – Fujin, the God of Wind, and Raijin, the God of Thunder. It is because of them that the gate is usually called the Thunder Gate.
