The memorial was erected in 1900, celebrating the thousand years of Hungarian settlement in the Carpathian Basin. The centerpiece of the memorial is a column topped with the statue of Archangel Gabriel holding the Holy Crown of Hungary. There are also seven equestrian statues of the chieftains who led the seven Hungarian tribes into the Carpathian Basin by the end of the 9th century. In front of the column, there is a cenotaph.
Behind the column, there are two symmetrical colonnades decorated with 14 statues of important Hungarian historical figures (mainly kings of Hungary). Apart from those, there are also four statues of personified abstract concepts – War, Peace, Labour and Wealth and Knowledge and Glory.
