Rebuilt in 1587 during the Portuguese occupation, this sixteenth-century stronghold stands on rocky cliffs overlooking the harbor. Originally predating the Portuguese invasion, the structure serves as a significant example of military architecture. It is historically distinguished as the first fortification in the area to employ cannons for defense.
The interior houses a weapons museum and a collection of historical artifacts, including original Portuguese inscriptions. Interactive exhibits detail the fort's strategic role and its evolution from a military stronghold into a cultural site. The grounds also include an open-air theater.
Known as one of the twin forts alongside Al-Jalali, the site provides views of the surrounding harbor and the Al Alam Palace. The fortress remains a key landmark representing historical defensive history and sovereignty.
