The site originated as an Iberian construction and was subsequently expanded by Roman and Arab civilizations. It is a double fortification consisting of the Castell Menor, built on ancient remains, and the larger Castell Major, which dates to the medieval period. Positioned 310 meters above the city, the fortress held strategic importance due to its location along the Via Augusta, a major Roman road.
Throughout the medieval period, the castle served as a defensive stronghold and a state prison for notable figures. It was occupied by various rulers, including the Almoravides, Almohades, and the Crown of Aragon. The fortress played a key role in several conquests and sieges, maintaining its military significance until the War of the Spanish Succession.
The structure exhibits Valencian Gothic architectural elements and is designated as a National Monument. The fortress is open to the public and serves as a major landmark, with recorded peak attendance during Easter week and the October holidays. In 2022, the site received nearly 80,000 people following a significant increase in interest.
