Mount Bisoke is a volcanic peak reaching an elevation of 3,711 meters within the Virunga Mountains. The summit is characterized by a crater lake, and the mountain also features a second body of water known as Lake Ngezi. While often described as a dormant volcano, it is also classified as an active stratovolcano within the Albertine Rift.
The mountain serves as a critical habitat for endangered mountain gorillas. It gained historical prominence due to its proximity to the Karisoke Research Center, which was established by Dian Fossey.
The slopes are a destination for mountain hiking and trekking. The volcano straddles the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the summit located on the Rwandan side.
