Suvorov Monument

This 12-meter high memorial cross is carved directly into the rock face of the gorge. It was established in September 1898 to commemorate the Russian soldiers who died during the Alpine campaign of 1799. The monument serves as a memorial for those who fell during the battles between the forces of the Russian Empire and the Napoleonic army.

The site honors the troops under the command of Alexander Suvorov, a Russian Generalissimo who led the crossing of the Alps. Recognized as a National Monument, the rock-carved structure marks the historical significance of the military engagements that took place in this region during the French Revolutionary Wars.
