Originally established in 1864, the museum moved to its current premises in 1967. The building was designed by architect Franco Minissi and occupies an area of 2,442 square meters. It serves as a primary repository for the cultural heritage of the region, specifically documenting the ancient civilization of Akragas.
The collection consists of 5,688 artifacts organized across 18 rooms according to chronological and topographical criteria. These items span from prehistoric times to the late Greco-Roman period and include state, civic, and diocesan archaeological collections. The museum is open to the public and is part of the cultural landscape associated with the city's designation as the Italian Capital of Culture 2025.
Among the most significant exhibits is the original Telamone, a colossal stone figure from the Temple of Zeus. Other notable masterpieces include the Efebo di Agrigento, a Greek sculpture from 480 BC, and an extensive selection of Attic vases and sarcophagi from various periods.
