The site consists of medieval castle ruins situated on a small river island. Built in 1385 by Erik Mus, the fortress served as the headquarters for the bishop's estate in the western part of the Århus diocese. Over time, the location transitioned from a religious seat to a royal administrative center and the headquarters for the local county.
The castle was eventually demolished in 1726 after suffering from significant decay and a fire. Today, the location is recognized as a cultural heritage site and an ancient monument, preserving the remains of the historic fortification where the Gudenå river meets the lake.
